Abstract

"The role of digital activism in supplementing, and even supplanting, traditional journalism as Africa's watchdog has been under researched. Akpojivi provides an exhaustive and timely dive into digital activism through meticulously researched case studies in Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, and optimistically positions digital activism as one powerful answer to neo-colonialism and poor governance. This is a book that will assist well-reasoned interpretations of online social movements in Africa for years to come." -Prof. Chris Paterson, University of Leeds, UK. This book analyses social movements, digital activism and protest actions in Africa using a de-colonial approach, with selected case studies of #BringBackOurGirls, #OurMumuDonDo, #FeesMustFall, and #OccupyGhana from Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana. This book examines the ideological background of social movements and the broader micro/macro structures that exist within these movements and how these structures shape their engagement with state and non-state actors. The author argues that the ideological orientation of movement founders influenced the broader belief of each movement, which in turn shaped the micro and macro structure and relationships of the movements and their engagement with the state. Furthermore, the author argues that not all movement members aligned with the movement's ideological belief, thus the disconnect and contestation within these movements. This book provides much-needed systematic, critical review and cutting-edge research into the ideology, practices, performance, and trends of social and digital movements in Sub-Saharan African countries. Ufuoma Akpojivi is the Policy, Research and Learning Lead at Advocates for International Development, United Kingdom. Prior to this, he was an Associate Professor at the Media Studies Department, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and a Visiting Professor at the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University, Nigeria. He has over 16 years of professional, and exceptional teaching and research experience in Media and Communications.

Abstract

Although every area of life is permeated by digital processes, the majority of Germans seem to resist digital alternatives when it comes to the activity of reading. The printed book continues to enjoy much greater popularity than the eBook. This seems surprising, since the entire communication behavior has moved to digital devices. So what lies behind this? Why are there still printed books in digital times? Previous studies of the printed book have focused primarily on its media future, as this seemed threatened by digitization. In this work, Janina Krieger instead examines the past from three perspectives in order to gain insights into the present. While other studies always chose one method, which mostly belonged to the quantitative approach, here three subjects are identified, which are examined with different methods and in their combination can provide an answer to the research question: the consumers of literature (the readers), literature itself (the selected genre is the novel), and the media theories of the 20th century, which have already dealt with media change. The author Janina Krieger holds a PhD in German Literature and Media Studies from the University of Mannheim. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract

Established in 1957, the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) has facilitated international exchanges and research collaborations among academics, journalists, and other practitioners, addressing media and communication problems and influencing theory and practice through research and participation in global, regional, national, and local debate. The chapters focus on prominent areas of research that have attracted the interest of scholars; political struggles of a membership engaged in research across East and West, global North and global South divides; selected country and regional contributions to the association; and reflections on significant scholarly and institution-building contributions to the association by George Gerbner, James Halloran Stuart Hall, Herbert I. Schiller, and Dallas W. Smythe. Readers will find a history of an academic professional organisation and insights into the controversies, conflicts, failings, and achievements of IAMCR members who developed the field of media and communication research and journalism practice.

Abstract

This volume conceives cooperation in broad terms as any form of mutual making, in which goals, means, and procedures are seen as ongoing accomplishments. From the exchanges of goods or information, to the interactions between bodies or organizations, and the coordination between colleagues, competitors, friends or foes. Mutually making the conditions of mutual making entails translating heterogeneous interests, negotiating conflicting values and articulating distributed activities. On the one hand, the contributions cover different notions and concepts of cooperation in diverse fields of study: from the mundane cooperation of everyday life to collective endeavors within specific domains. On the other hand, the contributions share a focus on the practices of making cooperation possible through cooperatively creating the conditions for cooperation itself. Seeing cooperative media both as a condition and consequence of cooperation, the volume sheds light on a general feature of media, technologies and instruments that both enable and constrain the collaboration between heterogeneous social worlds, with and without consensus. About the Editors Clemens Eisenmann is postdoctoral researcher at the Universities of Siegen and Konstanz in the field of sociology. Kathrin Englert is a sociologist at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg. Cornelius Schubert is professor for sociology of science and technology at TU Dortmund University. Ehler Voss is an anthropologist at the University of Siegen.

Abstract

The coming generations of wireless network technologies will serve, not only as a means of connecting physical and digital environments, but also to set the foundation for an intelligent world in which all aspects are interconnected, sensed, and endowed with intelligence. Beyond merely providing communication capabilities, future networks will have the capacity to "see" and interpret the physical world. This development compels us to re-imagine the design of current communication infrastructures and terminals, taking into account crucial aspects such as fundamental constraints and tradeoffs, information extraction and processing technologies, issues of public security and privacy, as well as the emergence of numerous new applications. This field of research is known as Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC), and it has ushered in a paradigm shift towards the omnipresence of radio devices. This book provides the first comprehensive introduction to the ISAC theoretical and practical framework. Each chapter is authored by a group of world-leading experts, including over 10 IEEE Fellows. Readers can expect to gain both a broad overview and detailed technical insights into the latest ISAC innovations.

Abstract

This book focuses on Political Public Relations (PPR) Techniques of both Russian and US Leaderships. It does so by analysing leadership (presidential or otherwise) inaugural addresses from the two countries between 1980 to 2018, using triangulation analysis of verbal, non-verbal language, and emotions of speakers. Given that the Russian perception of Political Public Relations, known as Political Technologies (PT) in Russia, is unique and often misunderstood or misinterpreted in Western scholarship, the book acts as a bridge between these two fields of studies. With that in mind, the study of Political Technologies is explained and applied in a wider sense than is offered by other disciplines, specifically in more meaningful ways than suggested in communications discipline in the West. In doing so, the book not only offers a deep dive into theory, but also provides a unique methodology aiming at extracting and analysing PPR or PT techniques. This triangulation method allows us to investigate a combined effect of audio visual and verbal "effects" on the general public, and offers a way of interpreting such "effects". Readers would understand more about the research dynamic in PPR discipline, apply the triangulation methodology to expand this research, and more generally find out more about the evidence-based list of PPR techniques and their applications and interpretations. Dr Albina Gayoso is an expert in political PR and behavioural psychology. Her academic career started in Russia where she completed a Bachelors with Honours in International Relations. She has been actively involved in UN volunteering during her years as a student, and in 2014 she became a recipient of a University of Newcastle (Australia) International Postgraduate Research Scholarship and UON Research Scholarship. She then moved to Australia to pursue her PhD project in Political Communication, where her research explored the practice of Political Public Relations techniques and their components, with a particular focus on the use of verbal and nonverbal communication in inaugural addresses of Russian and U.S. presidents with a focus on the years from 1981 through to 2013. Currently, she is working as Senior Stakeholder Engagement Officer at NSW Government and teaching at UN research and training centre CIFAL Newcastle. .
